There are lots of Eames knock-offs out there these days, many of which are made from...horror of all horrors...plastic. In our house, plastic is reserved for children's toys (in limited quantities), coke bottles and forgotten objects soon to be removed as part of our house-wideIkea cleanse.
Eames reproductions aren't always necessarily cheap either, like this one, likely made in China and still going for £303 at the Conran Shop. Or this Vitra one selling for 309€ on German website Einrichten-design. Or this one available on the Design within Reach (DWR) website for $399.
The original Eames shells were all made of fiberglass. One good way to tell the difference between a repro and the real deal is by checking the color against the original Eames fiberglass color palette. For example, this "aqua-sky" color one on Design Within Reach: pastel and plastic, plastic, plastic.
Now let's have a look at the original Eames fiberglass color chart:

So far we have managed to collect: Ochre light, Navy Blue, Greige, Parchment, Sea Foam Green (one of my faves), Medium Blue and Lemon Yellow (which I find a bit too "vintage" for my taste).
I have to admit that I am loving the pink, but so far have only been able to find these on Modern50, but at $1,050 per pop, I can probably live without.

These chairs are no more made in fiber glass as it is not as flexible as plastic. Even Herman Miller (the original editor) is using plastic. The quality of the seating is a lot better since they change the material and the impact on the environment lighter.
Hi Germi, thanks for your comment. I think it's a question of personal preference as well. The fiberglass is esthetically very interesting as you can see the fibers through the color. The plastics, of course, have their advantage as well but the price is very high for a plastic chair. I don't know anything about the impact on the environment but this is interesting to know.
Well scarcity effects prices occasionally eh!
